Wintec House wins two coveted awards
The substantial redesign and rebuild of an old Wintec brick building that once served as a high school has resulted in architectural recognition.
The recently redeveloped Wintec House has won excellence in two categories at a major property awards event in Auckland.
At a cost of $17 million the two storey building was redeveloped by Mainzeal and took 18 months to complete.
Mainzeal won both the Heritage and Adaptive Reuses and the Education and Arts categories at the Property Council Rider Levett Bucknall Property Awards held.
Mainzeal General Manager of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Branch, Finlay Irwin said it is great to be recognised for the hard work that went into redeveloping the building.
“Through the dedication of our staff we were able to mix the heritage building aspects with a unique modern architecture that the Wintec campus strives for.”
The 90-year-old building is located on the northeast corner of the city campus in Hamilton and opened in September 2010.
The Wintec House required extensive earthquake strengthening and because of its Historic Places Trust Category B rating, the facade had to be preserved.
The building, which was once considered for demolition, is now home to Wintec’s hairdressing and beauty students as well housing the Atrium – a large space used for a variety of events.
Wintec Chief Executive, Mark Flowers said Wintec is immensely proud of the building.
“I believe there is no other facility quite like Wintec House in the Waikato which combines educational facilities, a quality event space, and commercial offices all under the same roof.”
Wintec hairdressing student Shannon Cherry is enjoying her classes in the Wintec House.
“Wintec House is really flash – I think it is definitely a building that Wintec should be proud of.”
