It’s New Zealand music month and Hamilton band TastyBrown host their album release party this Saturday in Te Rapa.
TastyBrown started out as a five-piece band that mainly did covers but now they are ready to take their music to another level by releasing their debut album Kitchen which showcases a selection of their original songs.
This Saturday night the band will play live at the Gables Bar. Band manager Bob Pohatu said the audience would be blown away.
“TastyBrown are well experienced and pride themselves on live performance.”
The band have taken the indie route with their music. They have worked out of a garage and self-funded and produced their sound.
“It’s our first album and we wanted to give it a go ourselves. The only thing that wasn’t done by us was getting the CDs pressed,” said Mr Pohatu.
TastyBrown are proud to be Maori. That provides the “brown” element to their name and as for “tasty”, Mr Pohatu said it reflects the flavour of their music.
The new album has a reggae foundation, but is often influenced by a fusion of jazz, soul, or r&b.
“We have a saying in the band – It’s all about the groove.”
The band’s main priorities, however, are family and work. “We are very whanau orientated and all work full time jobs,” he said.
TastyBrown want to inspire people with their album, and hope to release another CD next year.
