These quirky, spitting animals are quite expensive but well worth it to many owners.

He started with two and his collection has now grown to 27:John Waterson a breeder of Suri and Huacaya Alpacas never thought these animals would be so addictive.

“Eight years ago we purchased two Suri Alpacas, they have the lighter coloured coat, and at $1200 a pop they are quite expensive but very worth it,” John says.

Alpacas are originally from Peru and were bought to New Zealand around 30 years ago.

The cost varies from $200 to 200,000. They eat the same amount as sheep and they live for around 18-20 years.

They have become quite common with about 10,000 in New Zealand.

“The animals are quite popular in Auckland with doctors and lawyers purchasing these animals, and are a great talking point”.

‘The Alpacas can spit mainly when the alpha female is pregnant but if you spit back it usually stops the behaviour’.

The animals are a lot of fun and are great for stress relief.

‘Alpacas do not talk back “ John says.
