The opening address made by Primary Industries Minister David Carter mentioned how fitting this year’s theme – The changing face of farming – is with what is happening throughout New Zealand’s agricultural industry.

“The primary sector is evolving at an ever increasing rate. Farming is very different to say 20 years ago. It is more challenging than ever.

“We must produce more with less. We must be more environmentally conscious. We must continue to improve the way we farm our animals and we must come to grips with the growing competition from new markets.”

The ceremony was capped off with the raising of the national and Fieldays flags where Waikato athletes who are competing at the London Olympics later this year were honoured.
