Howick woman trains for Tarawera ultra marathon to help Hospice charity
A Howick woman who lost her mum to cancer is planning to run a 62km ultra marathon to raise funds for a cancer charity
Leah Anstis is preparing for the biggest run of her life – all in the name of charity.
Anstis is training hard for next year’s Tarawera Ultra Marathon with all funds raised going to Hospice New Zealand.
“I lost my courageous mum to cancer. She was so lucky to have my family and amazing friends around to offer help and support.
“Unfortunately this is not the case for everyone,” the Howick resident says.
Anstis, 24, hopes to raise $2000 for the charity, helping them to continue their work for those with terminal illness.
“No one should have to go through such hard times alone and the hospice is there to offer support in whatever capacity they can.”
While a standard marathon is just over 42km, the Tarawera Ultra Marathon is run over three distances: 60km, 85km or 100km, all of them between Rotorua and Kawerau, passing by native bush, lakes and waterfalls.
Anstis is aiming to finish the 60km distance within eight and a half hours.
She admits the distance is not going to be easy, mentally or physically, but is hoping her sponsors will keep her in top shape.
Soul Space Pilates, of Howick, helps the runner to stay fit and strong while Body Zone Physiotherapy keeps her running and motivated.
“I’m really nervous. I always get wound up but when I know there are people waiting to see me at the end. Then I get quite emotional about it.
“I don’t want to disappoint people because they are sponsoring me.”
Before the March 2013 race day, Anstis plans to host an auction with the proceeds also going directly to Hospice New Zealand.
“I’ll also gladly accept offers of company on any of my training runs,” adds Anstis.
