Young guns win The Rev cycle race
Two elite international Kiwi riders stole the honours at Cambridge’s The Rev cycle race on the weekend.
Two young guns took out the elite categories in the Avantidrome REV Cycle race in front of hundreds of spectators this weekend.
Many professional cyclists competed including Shem Roger and Emma Crum who took out the elite men and women’s race.
Ex track and now international cyclist Shem Roger won the elite men over Hayden McCormick and finished the 135km race in three hours and 27 minutes.
Twenty four year-old Emma Crum, who spent last year racing against international big names in France, won the 100km elite women category after what she described as an “easy” ride.
She was the fastest woman in two hours 37 minutes.
“Getting over that first hill was a bit hard but once that was finished, it was pretty easy.”
The race started at Cambrbidge High School and saw riders head up the steep Sanatorium Hill early on in temperatures of up to 28 degrees.
About 1200 cyclists entered the event which had races for elite and recreational riders as well as children, event organiser, Kevin Endres said.
This was the second year the Rev has been based at Cambridge High School, which has “proven to be a good success,” Endres said.
“It was based on trying to get a recreational ride for the 100km so we managed to do that by moving it from Hamilton but also the park environment at the finish is a really neat atmosphere.”
The Avantidrome Rev Cycle race is in its eighth year. “It’s established now as a good time on the calendar to do it and people know about it.”
The day finished late in the afternoon as competitors and spectators relaxed in the sun to watch the band and the prize giving.
