The team hopes to raise more than $1000 for cancer in the upcoming Relay for Life.

Hillcrest High Schools relay team co-captains Kate Creighton, 17, and Helena McHugh, 16, have had a busy time  organising their team of Year 13 students.

Relay for Life, the overnight event which raises funds and awareness for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society, will be held this weekend at AgResearch, Ruakura.

Kate says their team is very excited. “I’ve known about the relay for ages because my mum works for Cancer Society but this year we finally got round to doing it,” she said.

“We have been making sure everyone gets their fundraising money in and knows what to bring on the day. We did gift wrapping for the Cancer Society to fund raise and did personal fundraising too.”

Their team will be taking couches, tents and blow-up mattresses on Saturday morning to make sure they have somewhere to rest when  not on the track.

“I don’t think that we will be getting much sleep though,” Helena said.

In the event each team is required to have one member on the track during the entire 22 hours.

Cancer Society Waikato and Bay of Plenty communications assistant, Sarah Fitzpatrick, said there are over 90 teams entered this year.

“This year we have 200 cancer survivors walking the first lap in the opening ceremony,”  Fitzpatrick said .

“The relay is about celebrating survivors and the support people, it is definitely a community-led event.”
