It was a close call but Roncalli rowing duo Libby Davenport and Kate Shaw from Timaru took home gold for the girls under 16 doubles at the Maadi regatta last week at Lake Karapiro.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a better race from them. They rowed a really good race,” coach Geoff McCrostie said.

Although they won all their races in the under 16 doubles before the final, Libby and Kate had to fight to take out first place in the A final on Saturday.

The girls beat the crew from St Kevins College by just under a second.

Kate’s mum, Sarah Shaw, said it was the toughest, most important race, and she had just hoped they would make the top three.

“I’m just speechless with what they’ve done today,” Libby’s dad, Nigel Davenport said.

Roncalli College also won gold in the under 16 coxed quad with Libby, Kate, Lilly Simpson, Laura Cockroft and cox Olivia Cockroft.

Along with their gold medals, Roncalli College take home the Craighead Diocesan Cup for the girls under16 double sculls and the Bethlehem College Cup for the girls under 16 coxed quad.

The winning pair have been rowing together for the last two years. They won the under 15 doubles at Maadi last year.

The Timaru secondary school has just over 500 students, 16 of whom represented Roncalli College at the Maadi regatta.
