“It was good to have them on the first day, a bit of a fun element but we really need to focus now,” said Wellington Girls rowing coach Mark Ware.

Nicola Cryer, 16 and Christina Neil, 17 were on their scooters yesterday for a final bit of fun before the semi-finals today.

“I think some of the spectators complained that we didn’t have them ,” said Christina.

The squad’s coaches decided the scooters were a distraction for the team and advised against using them during the competition.

Ware said the scooters will be back but right now the focus needs to be on the rowing.

All 44 rowers brought scooters to Karapiro.

Christina said the squad thought the scooters would help them move around the Maadi grounds easier .”Our team rode them for the first race, cheering on our rowers.”

The squad  spent four hours decorating the scooters  to create school spirit.

Their on-site tent is decorated  to show off school pride with a life-size Gandalf as they are the “middle of medal earth”.
