Georgie Pie returns to the Waikato
Georgie Pie is coming back more than a decade since it closed and Waikato is a part of the trial run.
Georgie Pie is to return to the Waikato after more than a decade.
McDonald’s announced this week that the famous pie will be sold at 11 of their Auckland and Waikato stores on a trial basis.
Hamilton McDonald’s stores in Frankton, The Base, and Five Cross Roads, along with Te Awamutu, are amongst the few stores who will be part of the trial basis.
The pies will appear at Greenlane and Queen Street in Auckland early next month before moving to other Auckland locations and the Waikato.
The classic steak mince ‘n’ cheese is the chosen pie, selling for $4.50.
McDonald’s are using the original Georgie Pie recipe with the only change being the removal of added MSG.
Future customer Caleb Hoolihan said: “I haven’t had Georgie Pie since I was five, and I’ve always hoped it would come back – I signed a petition. Hopefully it will taste as good as I remember.”
It has been hinted that if all goes well a nationwide rollout with different fillings may be on the cards.
But many fans around the rest of the country are disappointed that they are left out of the trial and are venting disappointment on the McDonald’s facebook page.
One said: “Once again the South Island is forgotten about. Damn You McDonalds, KFC is my new best friend. You’re useless!”
McDonald’s managing director Patrick Wilson has said he will answer fans’ questions via Facebook and twitter.
The pies will be manufactured at a former Georgie Pie production facility in Manukau.
