This year the programme features more than 30 presentations, workshops and events from New Zealand and abroad.

Wintec third year journalism student Isabella Stern said “I’m really excited, there are some really amazing people in my discipline [speaking at the festival] – in previous years there hasn’t been.”

“I’ve got at least one speaker lined up [to see] every day.”

Speakers include international photographer Cristina de Middel (Spain), media personality John Safran (Australia) in a special event hosted by TV3’s David Farrier, and New York fashion consultant and blogger Zara Mirkins (United States).

Festival director Kat Cox said probably 60% of the audience at Spark were Wintec students with the other 40% coming from outside Wintec.

“It’s a chance so that people don’t have to drive to Auckland or Wellington to attend a festival,” she said.

Wintec third year journalism student Caitlin Wallace said “It gives students the opportunity to see professionals out in the real world and gives [students] someone to aspire too.”

Kat said “It’s not just one medium… [it is] anything under the media arts umbrella – it makes us really unique.”

Spark is organised and hosted by the Wintec School of Media Arts in collaboration with partners from the creative industry community.
