Hamilton deputy mayor, Gordon Chesterman was at the ceremony to present The Gordon Chesterman Scholarship, which went to third-year Public Relations and Advertising student  Karen McLeod.

The scholarship was established in 2012 in recognition of the significant contribution and valued work of Mr Chesterman, a long-serving chair of the Wintec Council.

“My career has been media based, and I’m always happy to help recognise young people,” Chesterman said before the ceremony.

As well as sponsoring the award, Chesterman has a long history with Wintec. His father attended the institution in the 1930s, and his daughter in the 1990s.

“The School of Media Arts has always been a favourite, and I’ve shaken the hands of countless Wintec students”.

Chesterman also saw the night as a chance for students to celebrate with family, friends, and tutors.

“Watching the sheer joy of the families, it becomes quite an emotional moment,” he said.
