Fallen tree could cause power cut for Claudelands residents
Stormy weather has blown a tree on to power lines in Claudelands
Strong gusts of up to 90 km/h have blown a tree on to power lines on George Street in Claudelands this morning.
A member of the public reported the fallen tree to police at around 9am this morning.
The tree poses no danger to residents, but members of the public are asked to keep clear of the tree while it is removed.
Wel Networks line mechanic David Gyde says the tree is the first to have fallen in Hamilton but that other areas have been hit more severely.
“There are lines down in Raglan. There are 40-knot winds at the wind farm so quite a few lines have been coming down. This is a random one.“
Gyde said it is unclear if power will need to be cut for the tree to be removed.
“It would only be for the duration of them cutting it away so if it was to get cut off it would only be for half an hour at a guess. It’ll be left up to the vegetation team to see if they want to isolate it or not.”
Gyde said that tree removal can be difficult so power delays could last longer if the tree proves to be hazardous.
“It might be a bit tricky, they might have to hold the weight of that tree then cut one limb off at a time.”
Hamilton Police said that it has been an isolated event and no other damages have been reported to them so far.
