Korean traditional food popular at night market
Bulgogi, a Korean food dish, is proving popular at the Tron’s night markets
Korean food is proving popular at Hamilton’s night market.
Conny Kang, owner of a Korean food stall, Conny’s Bulgogi, said the night market is the place people can enjoy everything for cheap prices.
She sells Korean traditional food, Bulgogi, which is a finely sliced beef mixed with various spices.
“People can buy food from different countries after all the shops are closed,” she said.
She is the first Korean person to sell food in the night market. At first, she sold bakery food. However, when she saw other owners of Korean food stalls leaving the night market, she thought she could do it better.
“The key to success is that I knew what I was good at. I can cook Bulgogi best,” she said.
Kang, who has lived in New Zealand for 12 years, works two jobs. From Monday to Wednesday she teaches children to play the piano. The rest of the week she works her stall in Papatoetoe, Onehunga, Hamilton and Pakuranga.
Amongst the crowd was a Waikato University student, Julia Apulu from Auckland who was enjoying Bulgogi.
“It’s so sweet. I like Bulgogi compared to other food. Every Saturday I come here and buy this,” Apulu said.
She said the night market food is cheap so a good option for students who can explore different cultures in one place.
The night market is held at the Kmart car park every Saturday from 5 to 11pm.
