Wintec music students to shine at The Meteor
A wealth of musical talent is up for free at The Meteor this week.
Hamilton’s emerging music stars will take to the stage at The Meteor on November 26 as part of a series of showcases from Wintec’s School of Media Arts, Music Department.
Wintec music students are already making a name for themselves in the music industry.
Shaquille Paranihi-Ngauma is better known as one-sixth of successful boy-band Titanium. Back in Hamilton after touring the country with Titanium, Paranihi-Ngauma performs alongside other Wintec students in the R&B ensemble For the Brothers.
Country music fans may recognise Hannah Cosgrove as New Zealand Country Music Association entertainer of the year. She will be joined on stage by previous award winner, and brother, Dan Cosgrove.
The siblings are known for their guitar driven country-rock, and their energetic performances.
Dan Cosgrove has also enjoyed industry success with his debut EP charting earlier this year.
Up-and-coming acoustic duo Luke Aekins-Reilly and Amberly Shepherd, will also feature on Wednesday night. If you haven’t already heard of this pair, you soon will. The 2012 Smokefree Rockquest finalists are also recipients of a $10,000 NZ On Air grant for their next single release.
In total, eleven acts will take to the stage. The event promises to showcase talent across a diverse range of music genres, from R&B to rock, classical to country.
Programme Coordinator for the music degree, Jason Long, says Wintec is fortunate to attract incredibly talented musicians from all over the country.
This year’s showcase celebrates the first time performance has been offered as a pathway within the music degree.
“Music production and distribution has changed enormously in recent years” says Long. “But, performance remains an important means of getting your sound out there and generating a fan base.”
Long says Hamilton is also lucky to have a venue like The Meteor in which to perform. “This event will be the first of many future public performances.”
The event is free to the public. Doors will open at 6.30pm and performances will begin at 7.30pm.
