Kate Campbell, 15, and Ella Caverhill, 15, placed fifth today, automatically sending them to the repechage race to get into the semi-final.

“It was good, we researched everyone else in our race and found out that their rowers were medalists,” Campbell said.

This year is Campbell and Caverhill’s second year at Maadi.

“There are no novices in our team,” Caverhill said.

The girls enter a zone when they are competing with nothing but rowing on their mind and pushing themselves to get to the finish line.

“I always get nervous when we are rowing up to the start line and just about make myself sick,” Caverhill said.

Fresh off the water, they girls said they have had a really good time at Maadi so far.

Between races, warming up and warming down, the girls spend their spare time eating and relaxing at their camp site at Lake Karapiro.
