Wintec celebrates eco-friendly Diwali
Wintec hosted an eco-friendly Diwali this year – fireworks were excluded from the celebrations.
The return of Lord Rama to his Kingdom, Ayodhaya, after defeating evil became the reason for this wonderful day called Diwali or colloquially Deepavali.
At Wintec the event was celebrated in a firework-free, but environmentally responsible, manner by both Hindu and other Hamilton locals. The scene set at Wintec’s Atrium reflected the generosity of Hamilton people and the respect they carry for other sects.
“Diwali is homogeneous to happiness and enlightenment of emotions,” event organiser Harshmeen Kaur, said.
“It’s our pleasure to hold such events and we are happy to see people happy.”
Kaur said the event had a dual approach: to make international students feel at home and to spread feelings of joy, love and happiness.
“I did not miss Indian Diwali as Wintec has done it really well. It was my first Diwali here and out of my home so far,” Harpreet Singh. an international student from India, said.
Wintec’s International Centre celebrates Diwali every year . This year, the ANZ, Bank of India, and Pragma were co-sponsors .
A number of cultural performances, a ramp walk, and a quiz contest made the event a fun experience for guests.
Women present at the event, irrespective of their cultural background, had Jamaica Mignonette applied to their hands.
Dance performances of Indian classical dances and belly dances captured the attention of the 500-strong audience.
All in all it was a day of solidarity where people with cultural differences gathered in love and trust greeting each other Happy Diwali.
