To the average person, music consists of lyrics, melody and rhythm. To Hamilton musician Kent Macpherson none of these are of use.

Instead Macpherson  creates sonic art, consisting sometimes of just one note and no structure to create what he describes as “droning avant-classical soundscapes”, or drone music.

His sonic art creates a hypnotic sound that he hopes will give the audience different emotions and a new experience through repetitive sound.

Macpherson belongs to a group called The Unseen Mechanised Eye and throughout performances Macpherson said he would not mind if the audience falls asleep, as he has no control over how their emotions and how they are feeling when they performance .

“If people fall asleep I will be happy,” said Macpherson

The Unseen Mechanised Eye has had just one rehearsal.   “It will never be the same” in a live performance, Macpherson said.

Macpherson found himself composing sonic art as a direct result of starting work as a music tutor at Wintec.

Macpherson has never considered himself an artist before coming to Wintec, but instead regarded himself to be a composer or a performer.

The Unseen Mechanised Eye will perform at the  2016 Fringe Festival on March 11.

The  festival will be held from March 3-4, and tickets will be on sale at the door with a maximum charge of $10, and under 16 are free.
