Dave Dobbyn to speak at Wintec Press Club
Dave Dobbyn ONZM will speak at the next Wintec Press Club about a four-decade musical career.
Legendary musician Dave Dobbyn is the surprise guest speaker at the next Wintec Press Club free lunch extravaganza in Hamilton.
Previous speakers at the most famous public event in New Zealand journalism have traditionally featured serious journalists or TV presenters such as Duncan Garner.
“It’s time for a genius,” said author and Press Club life president Steve Braunias. “I’m thrilled that Dave has accepted the invitation. Everyone knows and loves his music. That includes his wonderful feeling for words – and Press Club is all about language.”
Dobbyn will compare and contrast the experiences of recording his very first album, back in 1979 with Th’ Dudes, and the making of his latest album, Harmony House, released this month.
“I’m looking forward to talking about the making of two albums, 37 years apart,” said Dobbyn.
“No doubt we shall uncover some marked differences and find some interesting common ground.
This will be fun.”
Dobbyn will speak for about 30 minutes at the luncheon, followed by a Q + A session.
The Wintec Press Club is staged on behalf of journalism students at Wintec’s School of Media Arts. An invite-only audience of about 100 regularly includes the biggest names in New Zealand journalism as well as politicians, entrepreneurs, sports personalities, and TV presenters such as Duncan Garner.
Speakers last year were Heather du Plessis-Allan and Paula Penfold, then both at TV3, and ex-Maori TV journalists Mihingarangi Forbes and Annabelle Lee.
Past and present journalism students from Wintec will be in attendance at the May 13 event, including Te Ahua Maitland, who was recently nominated for the best student journalist of the year award at the Canon Media Awards. She is the fifth consecutive Wintec student to feature as a finalist.
The 12-2pm lunch is invite only, and will be held at the Ferrybank restaurant and convention centre in Grantham St, on the banks of the Waikato River in downtown Hamilton.
Venetia Sherson, former editor of the Waikato Times, founded the Wintec Press Club in 2004.
