Couple start Hamilton retro market
A Hamilton couple, who were annoyed with the lack of authentic vintage markets, have started a retro market.
A Hamilton couple have started what they describe as the city’s first retro market.
Sandra Jensen, 39, and Mark Vuletich, 50, who are avid vintage and retro collectors, say they have filled an empty spot in the marketing scene.
Vuletich, who is also in charge of the Hamilton East Market, has been collecting vintage objects for as long as he can remember but said there are limited markets where the items can be bought and sold.
The couple are fed up with “vintage themed” markets and decided it was time for something more authentic.
“There is so many markets you know, basically market saturation,” Jensen said. “Some are more winter, some are more summer, some are indoors, some are outdoors – I wanted a good-old-fashioned vintage market. No dream catchers, no scented soy candles, and no crochets.”
The Retro Active Market, which will be held at the St Peters Scout Hall in Melville, will be large enough to accommodate 10-12 stall holders, but Vuletich said that’s not enough, “We’ve already got a waiting list for people, like retro dealers, who want a space – we just don’t have the space.”
Jensen said the couple have chosen the stallholders carefully to make sure the market remains authentic and to avoid stock clash. “It’s trying to pick stallholders who don’t necessarily stock the same things.”
The duo said browsers can expect everything from retro clothing to retro jewellery, retro books, and even retro furniture available for purchase.
The Retro Active Market will be held on the last Sunday of every month from 8.30am to 1pm.
