Hamilton deputy mayor supports $1.25m river plan

Hamilton Deputy Mayor Martin Gallagher has expressed his support for the $1.25 million Hamilton River Plan, after it won council backing this month.
Councillor Geoff Taylor pushed for the funding after a meeting on March 8 which discussed the council’s annual plan for 2017 and 2018.
The deputy mayor believed the funding was timely.
“Good things take time, so we have to make a start somewhere,” he said.
Gallagher compared Hamilton with Tauranga’s waterfront and its suburb of Mount Maunganui, saying Hamilton needs “pizzazz and zing, and it’s got to be attractive to live, work, and play”.
“We do need to be constantly upgrading – we have one of the world’s most beautiful rivers passing through the nation’s fourth-largest city.
“Why would we not want to develop that over time?”
