Balloons Over Waikato draws families
Hamilton’s annual balloon festival lifted off this morning, with excited children shouting out the names of their favourite balloons.
The crowd-pleasing Piranha, piloted by Doug Grimes, was the last balloon to fly out of Innes Common this morning for the start of Balloons Over Waikato.
Around 6.30am Waikato families of the Waikato began descending on Innes Common to witness the 24 balloons taking off for the first time this year.
Children in the crowd were yelling out the names of their favourite balloons: “Piranha, Little Wizard, Bud E Beaver!”
Mother of one Heather, who brought her child with her, said she felt like the festival was becoming more established.
“It’s a really good festival for the families involved and for the Waikato.”
The festival runs from March 21-25.
