Two hours’ free parking pleases some

The Hamilton City Council has tried to remedy the problem of shoppers going elsewhere, by offering two free hours of street parking. We ask people in Hamilton what they think.

Paid parking in the Hamilton Central Business District (CBD) has been an issue for years. The Hamilton City Council has tried to remedy the problem of shoppers going elsewhere, by offering two free hours of street parking. We hit the streets to find out what the people of Hamilton think.

Rachel Trevithick, Hamilton

Did you know that the CBD has introduced two hours free parking?
I knew about the free parking in the CBD and it costs $6 per hour after those two hours.

Do you park in the CBD?
No.

What do you think of the initiative?
It is good for two hours, it gets people in town which is normally a struggle. They’ve implemented the same thing that the Centre Place mall does on weekends but have made it every day. I think it is effective.

Do you think we should have to pay for parking at all?
Yes. We do need that money to keep the streets clean. We need it to a certain degree. The free parking gives more options when coming to town.

Anna Baigent, Thames

Did you know that the CBD has introduced two hours free parking?
No.

Do you park in the CBD?
Sometimes, when I come to Hamilton.

What do you think of the initiative?
It’s all right but still not enough. Although it is a step in the right direction.

Do you think we should have to pay for parking at all?
No we bloody well should not!

Amy Jessop, Te Awamutu

Did you know that the CBD has introduced two hours free parking?
No I didn’t. When and where can we park for two hours free?

Do you park in the CBD?
Yes.

What do you think of the initiative?
Seems like a good idea.

Do you think we should have to pay for parking at all?
No. It’s daylight robbery.

Sophie Richards, Hamilton

Did you know that the CBD has introduced two hours free parking?
Yes. I haven’t used it though, as for the same value I can use underground parking that has security, where the streets do not have security.

What do you think of the initiative?
The initiative doesn’t matter as people are still going to to The Base or Chartwell because it’s more convenient.

Do you think we should have to pay for parking at all?
Not for on the street parking. We should pay if we use parking buildings for maintenance.
