Finding a new sound
Stacy Rikona is looking far and wide, in order to find a unique sound that suits his style of music.
Music has been Stacy Rikona’s passion since childhood, when he picked up the nickname Da-Da whilst singing in a relative’s car.
He has not always known of his talent, but he has always loved music.
“I hate it when there is no music, ‘cause I feel alive when there is music.”
Stacy has decided to take a year off from studying commercial music at Wintec, as he endeavors to find a new sound; before he finishes his degree.
After weighing up everything he knew about music, he asked himself, “has anything different happened in music… is there anything that hasn’t been done?”
Stacy set out to experiment without being limited by genre or modern trends.
“I want to get elements of every genre and somehow combine them into my own. My go-to is R&B and hip hop, but I want to branch out into other genres.”
Having given himself a year to explore the concept of music in its entirety, Stacy has been listening to everything from R&B, to European hard-bass; he has even investigated Gregorian chanting and tried his luck with rock.
“I don’t look like the typical rock star type of guy,” he laughed.
Stacy believes the bass drop, which he refers to it as “the party starter”, is his favourite part of any song.
“It’s what every party needs,” he joked.
He ultimately believes that music is all about the message.
“Music for me is expressing what I can’t say… but through music I can actually say it.”
Stacy wants to find a unique sound to communicate a positive message.
“You can have an excellent accompaniment of music, but the message could be bad like: go steal, go gang bang, don’t go to school, or don’t be happy.”
He believes it is important for him to study all genres, because one genre may communicate his message better than another, and he is looking in unorthodox places in order to define this new sound.
Stacy is Christian and has been finding confirmation of his faith and inspiration for his new sound.
“I have been experimenting with the sounds of birds, wind, and water, and incorporating those sounds into my music.”
“When I am out in nature I feel free, and incorporating those sounds brings me closer to our creator and the sound of creation.”
The versatility of nature’s sounds has been Stacy’s most interesting discovery so far, and mixing them into his music has become one of the key features of the new sound he is creating.
