Las Mexicanas – As real as you can get

Sisi Longoria and Glen Pointon are the proud owners of Las Mexicanas, a food truck based in the Waikato.

Their point of difference in the world of food trucks is that, after living together in Mexico for 11 years, the husband-and-wife duo decided to feed New Zealand authentic Mexican food.

Pointon said: “It’s about as real as you can get here in New Zealand.”

They import items from Mexico to be used in their meals, so their customers get a real taste of Mexican cuisine.

“We came to New Zealand, and we were only here for a holiday, but she (Sisi) said we’ll stay, so we did.”

Sisi started the business as her job, while Glen worked at a car sales yard in Hamilton.

Pointon said: “She started with a gazebo and went to the markets, that took off.

“So then we bought a trailer and we had that for about six months and she grew out of that. Then we bought a bigger trailer.”

Pointon said in October last year he had to make the decision of leaving his job to support Sisi and the business full time.

“I finished up my job and I think within two weeks we were booked right through until the end of March.”

You can catch the Las Mexicanas team anywhere from South Auckland to the Bay of Plenty.

“In Auckland we have our regular. Every two weeks we go up to a company and we do a lunch up there.”
