Wonder Horse: for drinking and only for drinking
The view of first floor of Wonder Horse.
Wonder Horse is a bar located on Victoria Street; compared with other bars that appear as a mix of dining bars or cafes, this bar is purer both in content and style.
Huge wall cabinets are filled with all kinds of alcohol; gin, whiskey, vodka, tequila, brandy, rum and all kinds of beers and liqueurs. There are five bartenders at Wonder Horse. Although it offers some snacks, more than 95% of Wonder Horse’s menu contains different types of wine instead of ‘just listing wine’ as part of the menu.
“This bar has a nice atmosphere, people can enjoy drinking and talk with people freely,” said Mello, fan of spirits. He likes drinking in Wonder Horse and recommends us to come here and get a glass.
“The reason why I’m so interested in this bar is because it is purely a bar. Unlike most other people, they are a combination of café and bar. Those bars are noisy, the atmospheres can’t give me a mood of drinking.”
Mello said that the reason why he loves this bar, is not only the superb craftsmanship of the bartender and many kinds of spirits, but also you can have nice chat with bartenders. It is a place that people can have a nice chat and exchange ideas and feelings.
“There is another reason why I like this bar so much,” Mello said. “I have did some research on wine culture. Compared with Chinese wine culture, New Zealand wine culture is simpler. It is more like an indispensable part of people’s lives. Just like the Chinese love to drink tea, New Zealanders also love to drink a glass of their favourite wine in their leisure time after getting off work. The wine culture in China, is related to the so-called “wine table culture”. Chinese people always need a reason or a motive to drink. Unlike New Zealanders, where drinking wine is as common as drinking water.”
There are two activities in this bar; beer club and whisky club. The first Wednesday of every month at Wonder Horse is graced with the event that is Beer Club. People can enjoy 7 delicious craft brews and a snack for just $20. And on the third Wednesday of every month, people can taste 6 rare and unique whiskies plus a snack for $40. This is certainly a purists’ bar.
