Hamilton’s Freedom Protest: A look at the signs

Yesterday, thousands across the country participated in The Freedoms & Rights Coalition’s Freedom Day, protesting New Zealand’s ongoing lockdown restrictions. In the Waikato, an estimated 2000 gathered at Claudelands Park to do the same.

Wintec visual journalist Benjamin Wilson went along to capture the event.

The event started at 11:00am and was led by John Ferris.

He urged attendees of the protest to wear face masks, and to stay socially distanced. While many attendees wore face masks, there were also large numbers who remained unmasked, despite Ferris’ repeated request.

Police patrolled the event grounds.

This sign sent a clear message to the media present at the event.

There were utes…

… and a very large truck.

There were a lot of signs, with freedom and medical independence the more common concerns.

Some signs were more ‘colourful’ than others.

Many children were present.

Police monitored the crowd but did not enforce social distancing.

Attendees rose their hands in response to Ferris cheering for freedom.
