The Longest Drink in Town theatre preview

Theatre preview for Tracey Slaughter’s ‘The Longest Drink in Town’

The Longest
Drink in Town
is a show by acclaimed New Zealand author Tracey
Slaughter. Debuting at The Meteor Theatre from April 27th to 30th,
this show marks the first of Slaughter’s work to be adapted for the stage.

Liam Hinton
is one of the co-directors of The Longest Drink in Town and runs his own
theatre company called One Question Theatre.

Liam
describes the show as “exciting, fast moving and emotionally moving”, and says
that different characters will appeal to different people.

“Everyone
will come out of it relating to a different character”, he says.

All the cast
is local to Hamilton, with varying ages from five to 18.

Liam says the
way the play is done is different from others in that you can see the mechanics
of what is happening. Costume changes are performed on stage, but Liam says
there is a knack to making it blend into the background.

The play is
suitable for lots of different people, however it is for mature audiences. Liam
says “anyone could get something out of it” and thinks that anyone with an
interest in psychology would be especially interested in the show.

Liam says the
show is about the crucible of adolescence and childhood, with a key theme being
that what you put into children is what comes out of them. He describes one
character as being quite angry and violent because of the way she saw her
father at home.

Liam thinks
that the writing of the show is incredible, and the way the performers act will
surprise people.
