Nestled in the heart of Kirikiriroa – Hamilton, lies a place where students that attend Wintec – Te Pūkenga live. From the outside, it looks like a barren concrete square has just been popped on the side of the hill in the campus grounds. On the inside, however, it is a small community of students from all over the country who cook, clean, mingle and even play pool together.

It really strives to be a home away from home.

As well as making connections and forming friendships, there are other benefits to living on campus, including financial.

In the apartment the weekly rent covers the bills for power, internet and other utilities while travels costs between campus and home are non-existent, making it easier to save money.

Cost effectiveness is one of the reasons why Ōtautahi – Christchurch resident Alex Lang, 29, chose the apartments over renting.

“After looking at all alternative options, this one (the apartments), was the one that made the most sense, especially when you factor in little things like going to and from campus and the meal plans that they serve here”.

The lifestyle of not having to live with Mum and Dad and starting to learn to do everything for yourself is one of the best things that Alex has found while living at the apartments.

He says “the lifestyle, where we all do our own thing, and just being independent” is good.

This experience is paramount to any young adult who wants to move away from living at home, but still be in a safe family-like environment amongst peers.

The one thing that Alex and other students find annoying is ‘The Parking’, which they’d like to see improved. Alex says while it is awesome to have a free permit from the school to be able to park on the grounds, you still have to individually pay for each day you park and you have to do this before 8am. This is incredibly inconvenient for some students as a lot of classes don’t start until 1pm.

However, overall if you were looking for a cheap and affordable option in the city to live while studying at Wintec – Te Pūkenga , the apartments could be the best option for you. This is especially so given the high rental costs in the city of around $400 inclusive of utilities, compared to the $205 per week price tag of the apartments.

So, what are you waiting for? Book in now before there are no longer any rooms available and be ready to start the next chapter in your study life.
