Waikato students inspire at Excellence Awards
Waikato students received top honours at the Graeme Dingle Foundation’s Annual Excellence Awards, held on November 2 at the Auckland Zoo Domes.
The event, now in its 23rd year, aims to recognise the achievements and resilience of young New Zealanders who have excelled in the foundation’s programs.
Among the award recipients were Cade Tutehiwi from Tokoroa High School and Rarua Kiriwi from Fairfield College.
Cade Tutehiwi was honoured for his Outstanding Contribution as a Peer Mentor in the Foundation’s Stars program, which supports year nine students in their transition to high school and offers leadership opportunities for older students.
“It’s about doing what you can to positively influence the people you lead. Sometimes, true leadership involves recognising when to delegate to someone more capable, even if it’s challenging” said Tutehiwi.
Rarua Kiriwi received the Outstanding Achievement of a Career Navigator Participant Award and spoke about her aspirations to study engineering and work towards an apprenticeship.
“I am studying Engineering, specifically manufacturing & technology at Wintec Trades Academy. I also want to work my way up to earn my engineering certificate and degree, that will be a 3-year study while also working towards my apprenticeship” she said.
Graeme Dingle Foundation CEO Jo Malcolm-Black emphasised the significance of the Excellence Awards for young people, highlighting the support networks they have across the country.
“This event is extremely important for our young people. It shows them the overwhelming support networks they have across the country from their family, schools, businesspeople, and our teams,” said Malcolm-Black.
“It truly is something to celebrate as they’re encouraged to keep chasing their goals and pave a positive life trajectory.”
The Excellence Awards provided an opportunity for students, dignitaries, business leaders, and families to commend the hard work and dedication of these outstanding young individuals.
