Located snugly on Victoria Street in Kirikiriroa sits an exciting new hub for gamers, petrolheads, and everyone in between is The Race Corner. This fresh establishment promises adrenaline-pumping fun for all with its array of racing simulators.

The Race Corner owner, Daniel Andonov’s journey began modestly, working in Marketing for the Lawrenson Group after leaving high school. His knack for social media and marketing soon became evident, leading him to venture into his own agency.

Amongst the challenge of COVID-19 Andonov delved into real estate photography and videography alongside his friend Leighton, also known as Uncle Tics. As Uncle Tics gained traction online, Andonov shifted his focus to managing him, which also attracted others seeking his expertise.

The concept for The Race Corner was sparked by Andonov’s viewing of the movie Gran Turismo, which is about the journey of a young sim player turned professional race car driver.

Inspired by the film, Andonov dusted off his own simulator from storage, only to soon realise he couldn’t compete against his friends unless they had one as well. His solution? “Fuck it, ill buy 10,” he says.  Andonov bought two to test that his idea would work and then came the other eight. “It was a fairly quick turnaround project,” he says.

“I watched the movie and then I had the Race Corner set up within 10 days”.

Andonov said the idea with The Race Corner was that he wanted it to be a cost-effective all-weather activity.

“I just wanted it to be accessible to everyone”.

-Daniel Andonov

“We get people that are 8 years old, people that are 50 years old. Birthday parties to stag dos to people in town who want something to do.”

The ambience of The Race Corner immerses visitors into a world of speed and adrenaline. The tasteful colour scheme which is consistent in both the place and logo draws inspiration primarily from the sim seats themselves. Specifically chosen for their affordability the seats dictated the colour scheme while red LED lights added a soft glow, perfectly illuminating the surroundings.

However, the most unique thing in The Race Corner is its addition of a barber shop. Patrons can have a go on the sims while awaiting a haircut, creating a one-of-a-kind experience.

Looking ahead, Andonovs has ambitious plans for The Race Corner, including events like “Race of the Creators” to showcase the talents of sim racers and influencers. With figures like Mad Mike already showing support for The Race Corner, the future looks bright for this new establishment.
