Cafe Kopi serves up coffee and food with a side of light hearted banter and smiles.
Café Kopi, owned by Dave Tourelle, is located in Riverbank Lane in Kirikiriroa Hamilton’s CBD.
The Cafe serves freshly brewed coffee and food, all while aiming to put a smile on their customers faces. Cafe Kopi is a modern, inviting and minimalistic looking cafe. Its high ceilings and large glass windows create a light and airy atmosphere for its customers.
Dave had a career in Sydney as a carpenter before making the switch to hospitality. He started as a dishwasher in his friend’s kitchen before heading back home to Aotearoa New Zealand. From there his love for coffee began to brew, leading to him opening Café Kopi seven years ago.
Dave enjoys forming relationships and having fun banter with his customers. “I really do enjoy the people. The friends you make along the way—it’s the best part.”

When it comes to food and coffee, the phrase ‘quality over quantity’ explains Kopi perfectly. Dave believes a good café serves both good food and good coffee. “I think we’re trying to do proper Italian coffee, not the American version of it” Dave points out. “We try to keep it in a smaller cup, and no syrups—your coffee shouldn’t need a syrup.”
At Kopi, the love goes above and beyond just their food and coffee. When it comes to owning a café Dave’s favourite part is satisfying his customers and leaving them feeling lighter than they came in. Dave said, “The most important thing is that they leave happy. A grumpy customer will never come back.”
When it comes to pleasing his customers don’t expect anything too serious or deep. “I like a little bit of banter, but nothing too heavy.”
Café Kopi is the perfect place to go if you want to leave with a smile on your face. Whether that is through good coffee and food or a light hearted conversation with the lovely staff who work there.
