Recycle Boutique: where sustainability meets style
Fashion trends are forever changing but, second hand shopping is one that’s here to stay.

Second-hand shopping has skyrocketed in popularity, fuelled by the current “thrifting” trend. What many don’t realise is how powerful this choice is in addressing the critical issue of landfill waste.
According to Recycle Boutique’s research the global fashion industry produces 92 million tonnes of waste annually.
Floor manager at the Hamilton East store, Max Nasmith said Recycle Boutique feels that if people are shopping second-hand, “you’re not only giving clothes a second life but also cutting emissions from clothing production and disposal by up to 24%”. It’s a simple yet impactful way to make a difference.
Second-hand shopping can seem quite daunting however, with a carefully curated selection of items, Recycle Boutique makes second-hand shopping accessible and appealing.

Recycle Boutique is a bright trendy store in Hamilton East with a large range of clothing racks, from high end designer, American vintage, casual everyday wear and much more. The boutique collects many styles of clothing on consignment to fit everyone’s wants and needs.
Max said the clothing selection process at Recycle Boutique is guided by quality, condition, seasonality and current trends. Items that have been heavily worn out and stained won’t be accepted. This ensures that only well looked after and quality clothing will make it to the store floor.

Recycle Boutique actively promotes sustainability through their donation programme, where any un-purchased/uncollected clothing will automatically go. This programme has recycled an average of 350,000 clothing pieces annually. Recycle Boutique has many donation partners and since starting the programme in 2021 they have contributed $100,000 to their biggest partners, Trees that Count and KidsCan.
When shopping at Recycle Boutique you are reminded that your purchases help reduce waste, support charities and promote sustainable fashion choices.
Employees have noticed a shift in customer attitudes, with more people recognising the benefits of buying secondhand clothes. What was once seen as a less glamorous option is now appreciated for its cost-effectiveness, as well as the positive environmental impact. For people looking to help make a positive impact on the environment, second-hand shopping is a great effective and rewarding solution.
“You’re extending its life, there’s no need to throw something away when it’s perfectly good.”
