As summer kicks in, racing fans, festival goers and style lovers alike are turning their attention to one of the Waikato’s biggest annual events Waikato Cup Day on Saturday, December 13. The day has long been a fixture on the region’s social and sporting calendar, offering a unique mix of high-quality horse racing, fashion, and trackside entertainment.

On the track, the day features Group races, which are the top-tier events in horse racing. These races attract the best horses and jockeys in the country, often with significant prize money on offer. Group races are classified into Group 1, 2, and 3, with Group 1 being the most prestigious. These are the races that make headlines and can define a horse’s career. For spectators, this means fast, competitive racing, nail-biting finishes, and the chance to see the finest thoroughbreds in action.

But Waikato Cup Day isn’t just about the races. It’s a celebration of summer in Waikato, where the excitement of the track meets the buzz of live music, vibrant outfits, and festival-style energy.

One of the highlights for many attendees is the precinct at the 300m mark. Known for its lively atmosphere, it combines excellent views of the home straight with on-course DJs, live entertainment, food trucks, bars, and plenty of shaded seating. With photo-friendly spots scattered throughout, the precinct has become a favourite spot to soak up the racing while enjoying a social and relaxed environment.

This year, the precinct’s music lineup brings together familiar and fresh talent. Sean Hill, a longstanding DJ with The Edge, returns to set the tone with a mix of hits and crowd-pleasers. Joining him for the first time is festival favourite, HORSEPOWER. Brook Gibson & Beccie B a duo from George FM will be delivering energetic sets of UKG, dubstep, and techno. Their music adds another layer of excitement to the day, bridging the action on the track with the lively social atmosphere.

Fashion has always been an integral part of Cup Day, and the Adashiko Fashion Stakes returns in 2025 with a renewed focus on celebrating personal style. Competitors can enter categories ranging from bold, colourful statements to elegant and classic looks. Winners receive prizes from official partner Adashiko, including a ticket to The Ned Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie Racecourse, while new partner NES Boutique leads the ‘Local Lady’ category and contributes to the prize pool. For many, it’s just as enjoyable to watch the creative outfits as it is to follow the racing.

Waikato Cup Day continues to be more than just a day at the races. With top-level racing, fashion highlights, and a festival-like atmosphere, it has become an event that brings friends and racing enthusiasts together for a summer celebration that celebrates sport, style, and music.
