Wintec brings The Witches of Eastwick to Hamilton
Wintec’s Te Kawau Toi Theatre theatre students are showcasing their end of year musical, The Witches of Eastwick at the Meteor Theatre from tonight until Saturday.
The show is based on the 1984 novel of the same name by John Updike, and was adapted into a musical in 2000. A popular 1987 film version starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The cast, which comprises of Year 2 and 3 students, have been in rehearsals for over two months after first receiving their scripts at the start of semester 2.

Lead male for the show, Noah Fortuin, enjoyed playing Darryl Van Horne, a devilish character who goes around Eastwick seducing three local women, Alexander Medford (Georgia Willats), Jane Spofford (Laeticia Austin) and Sukie Ridgemont (Kate Scotting).
“It was fun, I got to play around with people and mess with them, given the character has so much confidence.”
Fortuin said that working alongside tutors Kyle Cheun and Nick Braae and choreographer Racheal Bloemendal, was helped by the time they’ve already had together, “I have worked with them for three years now, after a while you get to know their style so it makes it easier for me”.

Braae said that deciding what show to have for their end of year performance was informed by the make-up of the theatre group. “The play requires strong female leads and singers, who we have in our class”
While piecing together the performance, Braae says the most challenging part was the inclusion of screen projection, which is featured throughout the show, and the most enjoyable part was the ensemble pieces, with all the cast working together to bring the energy.
For any aspiring performers that were thinking of joining the course in the future, Fortuin has one message for you.
“Chase your dreams and do it!!”
