Wintec International students get career insight from employers.
Wintec International students were treated to a career panel on November 4 at the city campus. The half-hour workshop was used to share insight on what New Zealand employers look for in CV’s, tips for interviews, what to avoid and how to make a good impression during interviews.
The panellists included: Chris Phillips, Asoc Vice President Fonterra, Eve Mawston, Longveld Engineering, Amanda Shum, Hill Laboratories, Mikayla Thomasen KPMG and Sharon Jeffries, Everest People Recruitment.

The workshop, led by the Wintec international team, helped students to meet face-to-face with the panellists and have a networking session at the end. The students were encouraged to learn and incorporate Kiwi culture, as it shows their commitment to the job and easier relations with coworkers.
Chris Phillips noted that jobs are easy to do, it is the people and culture that are different. He encouraged them to put themselves out there as opportunities will keep coming, “Positivity is key, know what you want to be – it is about discipline.”
He said even if an opportunity is not what you want, the processes and procedures and networks you build are important. While balanced is important, he said “When you think you can’t do something, that is what you must do, step outside your boundary.”

Thomasen noted that Wintec students are valued, as they get practical experience, with classes having an average number of students, it gives each of them more time with their tutors. “I like Wintec because it is relevant to the real job market.”
Shum said that it is important to highlight hobbies when writing a CV as it helps companies to know and understand the applicant better. She also encouraged the students to get an idea of the industry, look at key skills and apply them in the relevant industries .
The event was followed by a CV writing workshop on the 5th from 9 am.
