Wintec students teaching future journalists
This week, senior academic staff member Abby Dalgety, and Bachelor of Communication third year students, Ray Raynel and Ronella Felizardo were at Hukanui School as guest tutors for the Junior Journalism elective.
The students said it was a privilege to be invited along to the school, where they spoke with Year 2 and 3 students about the art of storytelling and how to conduct interviews. Most of the young students were attentive during the presentation, especially when they spoke about their favourite animated series and the stories they would like to write on their own school paper, The Huka News.
The paper will feature stories about events like the disco, the newly built hall and human interest stories about the students and faculty.

After the presentation, Ray and Ronella asked the students what they had learned during the teaching session. Oliver, aged 8 said, “We learned about what journalists do.” While Charlie, 8 and Darcy 6, honed in on the importance of narrative, “Storytelling is important for a journalist. The story needs to be interesting for people to read.” Ida, 8 also nailed one of the key features of journalism saying “Taking notes is really important.”
Ray and Ronella said it was nice to see young students taking an interest and the future journalists were enthusiastic and engaging, with questions that kept them on their toes. One student who stood out during the session was Nolan, whose questions, energy and enthusiasm led his whole class into asking more questions – a budding future journalist maybe?
