Jetstar making it’s domestic debut

Hamilton Airport is slowly returning as a preferred travel option for residents across the city and neighbouring towns, with Jetstar launching its new daily jet service between Hamilton and Christchurch. The move marks the return of regular domestic jet flights to the Waikato, a shift welcomed by travellers and aviation enthusiasts alike.

Jetstar will operate the route with an Airbus A320, offering a faster and higher-capacity option for passengers. Air New Zealand continues its mixed use of ATR-72 turboprops and A320 jets, having relaunched the A320 service on 18 September.

However, Air New Zealand’s jet flights currently operate only on Wednesday–Friday and Sunday–Monday, meaning Jetstar provides more consistent jet access for Waikato travellers.

Jetstar’s daily A320 flights will add more than 100,000 passenger seats each year, significantly boosting capacity on a route that has long been limited. For passengers, the expansion offers not only more flights but also greater convenience and choice. Faster jet services mean reduced travel times compared to ATR turboprops, while the larger planes increase seat availability, creating potential for more competitive fares.

The expansion also strengthens Jetstar’s footprint in the region. The airline remains the only carrier offering international flights from Hamilton, with year-round services to Sydney and the Gold Coast. Adding Christchurch to its network reinforces Hamilton Airport’s role as a regional gateway, providing easier access to both domestic and international destinations without the need to travel to Auckland.

Hamilton resident and plane enthusiast Sonny Titter said he enjoys seeing the renewed activity at the airport. “I really enjoy watching the jets fly overhead,” he said. “I remember when they used to have jets here all the time, it’s great to see them back.”

Industry observers note that the competition between Jetstar and Air New Zealand could benefit passengers through improved schedules, better pricing, and increased choice.

Hamilton Airport chief executive Mark Morgan said customers would warmly welcome more jet connectivity direct to Christchurch, as well as more choice.

“I think it’s fantastic. Again, it is an acknowledgement that Hamilton and the wider Waikato are strong and growing markets. There is a real demand here to be met, and I’m sure the Jetstar flights will create interest and be well supported.”

With both airlines now operating the route, Hamilton Airport is showing itself as a more attractive option for travellers in the Waikato region. Jetstar’s new daily jet service means easier connections for business, tourism, and visiting family, as well as showcasing Hamilton’s growing role as a key domestic and international gateway.
