Gish lives up to Youtube hype

Gish gets a thumbs up from Ethan.

For years I have watched Youtube clips of Gish’s live performances, waiting for my opportunity to see a show in the flesh.

When this arrived last Friday night at The Palace Hotel in Te Aroha, I took it with both hands.
Dubbed the “New Billy T” on entry, he opened the night with his own version of a Maori national anthem.

Famed for his quick-wit, smutty jokes and ability to create parody version of songs, he soon had the rural crowd eating out of the palm of his hand.

One of the high points of the evening was a particularly dirty version of the Banana Boat song about an encounter he claims is a ‘true story’.

However, the night did not end without its share of low-points.

Whether it was too much alcohol, or the excitement of actually having something to do in Te Aroha, some of the audience were unable to stop calling out at inappropriate moments, sometimes distracting Gish and interrupting his show.

After some warning, he began to sing songs about those interrupting, embarrassing them and entertaining the audience at the same time.

All in all, a great night for only $20!
