Thomas the Tank Engine steams into Te Aroha

Te Aroha’s miniature train enthusiasts are growing in number.

Te Aroha miniature train enthusiasts will showcase some of their prized trains this Sunday as the miniature and model train society hold another community display day.

The display is entering its second year of operation this month with a steady increase of community interest and two new volunteers over the last six months.

Te Aroha miniature and model railway society chairperson Mary Massey says visitors can expect to see two new trains on the model railway display.

“We have recently purchased a new Thomas the Tank Engine and steam train set,” Mrs Massey said.

Society members involved in the model display are still looking for volunteers to help run the trains from 10am – 2pm on the first and third Sunday of each month when display days are held.

“We would like to get at least five more volunteers before the miniature train is running because a lot of the work is fiddly and we need the manpower.

“Hopefully when we get the miniature train running though we will be able to open every weekend,” Mrs Massey said.

Visitors are asked to bring a gold coin donation on the day with all donations going towards new trains and the upkeep of the miniature outside railway.

The Fieldays “Big Little Town” winner for yet another year also offers visitors to the region the chance to ride the Te Aroha leg of the Hauraki Rail Trail which finishes up at the railway station on Burgess St where the miniature railway is situated.
