Severe earthquakes rattle the country

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has sent central New Zealanders scurrying.

A severe 6.2 magnitude earthquake of an 8km depth has shaken central New Zealand today, followed by numerous large aftershocks.

The quake struck at 2.31pm, 10km southeast of Seddon. A 5.7 quake struck nearby around six minutes later. A number of smaller shakes continue to rattle the country, ranging from weak to severe on GeoNet.

Christchurch man Peter Walker was sitting in his car on Moorhouse Avenue when “the car started rolling”, he said.

“I wondered if it was just the wind, but being well used to what an earthquake feels like in the car I wasn’t sure it was just the wind.

“I was surprised it was Seddon based as I haven’t felt any of those here. I figured it was a fairly big quake to feel like that here.”

People were reporting feeling the earthquake as far north as the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Central New Zealand suffered a cluster of large to severe earthquakes mid July, the largest reaching 6.5 and causing widespread damage, including streets covered in shattered glass and chunks of rubble in Wellington city.
