Oh, the feeling of gliding through the water

Bethlehem College rower Bree McGuire discovered the sport through school friends – and hasn’t looked back.

At just 13 years old Briana (Bree) McGuire is set to take on Maadi Cup.

“A couple of my friends were doing [rowing] so I thought why not give it a go.”

McGuire has been rowing for one year, after being a cox for a year. She is now ready to compete at this year’s Maadi, in the U15 coxed quad and the U15 double for Bethlehem College.

After discovering the sport through school friends, it is clear she has found her true passion. “I love the feeling when you are gliding through the water.”

How does she manage her schooling, homework, and training?

Bree says it would not be possible without the help of her number one fan – Mum, Kirsty Downey.

Training is five to six times a week in the afternoons and, on the odd occasion, they train on a Thursday morning, as well as the usual afternoon session.

Bree says after school each day she goes home to conquer her homework, before heading to her two-and-a-half-hour training session at 5pm.

Then it is home for dinner and more homework.

“You have to have perseverance. You can’t give up because if you do you’re not only letting down yourself but the whole team as well.”
