Through to the semi by 0.01 of a second
Izzy Hurley has managed to pull herself across the line in the nick of time.
Fifteen-year-old Izzy Hurley from Burnside High School came fourth today. Big deal? Massive deal.
Fourth meant a place in the semifinal.
In Izzy’s U16 girls singles quarterfinal today, the finish for fourth place came down to a fraction of a second.
In the last 250 metres all she could think was: “You don’t do this for nothing.”
When she got over the finish line not even the commentators knew which girl got fourth. The crowd was in a fluster and the officials had to work quickly to get the correct times.
Izzy said her heart was still racing right until the point they announced her as fourth by one hundredth of a second. Relief.
This is Izzy’s second season rowing and she has been training for the last six months.
Back at the team tent after the race Izzy rested before racing in the U17 doubles.
How does she conserve her energy and get herself ready for another tough race?
“I just sit down in the shade and eat lots of good stuff,” she smiled.
To Izzy “good stuff” is made up of things like protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes.
“Apples and protein bars are my favourite,” she said.
Izzy finds out tonight what time her semifinal will be tomorrow.
