Party lights up Tawa community

A local church alternative to halloween is proving increasingly popular.

Fun was had by all at the Tawa Community Light Party held as an alternative to halloween by the New Life Church.

Light Party coordinator Michele McDonald said the church community event had been running for 14 years and the number of attendees had grown steadily.

“We started off with around 30 to 40 kids and now we have close to 300,” she said.

“Initially we wanted to create a safe environment for kids to keep them off the streets and it has grown from there.

“Kids love the games and the dancing and watching their friends in the talent quest.”

Dylan Lucre-Scott, an eager talent quest participant, said it was fun getting up on stage and dancing in front of everyone.

“I won a $10 gift voucher and a cool colouring in thing,” he said.

McDonald said the good thing about the event was that it was all free thanks to support from local businesses and Wellington City Council who were the main sponsors.

“We also have a staff of very loyal volunteers.”

Sweet treats were not lacking on the night and McDonald attributed much of these to a wonderful lady who once a year baked up a storm.

“It’s her thing,” she said.

Countdown generously donated goodie bags too.

Countdown store manager, John Angelica said he thought the party was a safe child-friendly event that was an alternative to traditional door knocking.

“It was a worthwhile community event and I supported it.”

Elaine Louw, a parent who attended the party with her two children, said she preferred something like this that was fun and entertaining instead of the traditional halloween theme.

A mixed group of people attended the two-hour event where children and parents enjoyed the annual Talent Quest, local church band, face painting and carnival games.
