Businesses look for boost in Hamilton CBD

Construction is underway on the old Farmers
building on Collingwood Street

Central Hamilton business owners are looking for a boost once the Waikato DHB has moved into the former Farmers building on the corner of Collingwood and Alexandra Streets.

The DHB move brings the possibility of hundreds of new customers into an area that is quickly becoming empty.

Chris Lander from MK1 Comics on Victoria Street said: “The DHB will be a massive positive with its new customers.”

The rebuild is likely to be a boost for businesses in the area including Collingwood Shoe Repairs. Employee Manish Chauan, who has worked there for 14 years, is looking forward to seeing more foot traffic in the area.

The Waikato DHB chief executive Dr Nigel Murray has said that they are hoping to move significant support services such as Population Health, Community Mental Health and diabetes services into the building  by the end of the year.

Murray hopes the site will create future flexibility for expansion of other DHB services.
