Oh Lord! A chip off the old block

Chris Lord Jnr has cleaned up at the first ever Rookie Stihl Timber Sport National Championship under the watchful eye of his dad.

Chris Lord dominated the competition on his way to winning the inaugural Rookie Stihl National Timber Sports Championship at this year’s Fieldays.

And no one could be more chuffed than his dad, whose name he shares and who was sideline as his son cut and chopped his way to the title.

Lord will take home a $500 Stihl voucher and $800 in cash. He also qualifies for the Rookie Stihl World Championships, which are to be held in Liverpool later in the year.

For  Chris Lord Sr, seeing his son take up the sport he loves and do so well gives him huge pride.

“He used to follow me around and come along to all the events as a kid,” he said.

“He’s come a long way from when he first started chopping when he was 7 and competing, even when he was competing at 12.”

The older Lord, a Wintec tutor, has been involved in the timber sporting world for many years, both competing and behind the scenes.

“I competed myself for 10 years and then after that I did a lot of work on the admin side to grow the sport and help out behind the scenes,” Lord said.

When Chris Lord Jr was announced the winner of the event there was nothing but immense pride for his achievement, with a smile that could not be wiped off his face.

But Chris Lord Sr had no hesitation in answering who would have been the winner if the two ever competed.

“Oh, he would win by far.”
