The 65.5 ha Waiwhakareke park, opposite the zoo, serves as a focus for Hamilton’s wider biodiversity restoration which includes lake and lakeshores, the Waikato River, its banks, and the city’s network of gullies.

Stage One of work on the shared entry between Hamilton Zoo and Waiwhakareke planned by the Hamilton City Council started in February. It is expected to deliver a new entry building for the zoo, connections between the two sites, a café, and restrooms.

The $7.5m project funded by the Council’s 2018-28 Long-Term Plan is expected to take 18 months. Stage 2 will provide better pedestrian access combined with improved bus facilities. An upgrade of Brymer Road starts later this year and may be closed at times.
