Hospitality: a quest to rebuild the industry

COVID has hit us hard. The hospitality industry has been flipped upside down, but one new business seeks to help people achieve a better workplace story.

Not everyone loves their job like a caffeine head loves coffee. In the past couple of years, hospitality workers have had a hard time due to COVID-19. According to Stats NZ, from April 2019 to April 2020, spending in the hospitality industry had dropped 95%. Businesses have gone under, staff became redundant and profits dropped. All these things have caused owners and employees to feel unsatisfied with their jobs.

coSCRIPT Limited is a local Hamilton business that was recently founded with the ultimate goal to help hospitality workers to feel satisfied and have better workplace stories. It does so through getting hands-on involvement with Hamilton businesses. But what does this mean and how is it achievable?

coSCRIPT Limited is a local Hamilton business that was recently founded with the ultimate goal to help hospitality workers to feel satisfied and have better workplace stories.

coSCRIPT’s founder, Andrew Sing aims to “bring new solutions to the market” by supporting business owners directly and creating an advocacy platform for employees. Through their hands-on methods, coSCRIPT brings a standard business into a collective where businesses work and thrive together.

One of coSCRIPT’s hands-on involvements is brokering a partnership between local business, Diesel Coffee, and Hamilton cafes

As said on their website, “coSCRIPT is a catalyst for creating better workplace stories.” coSCRIPT employee, Nastasia Kelsen, was willing to share her experiences in her current job and the hospitality industry. Nastasia was the events manager at a bustling café until COVID hit and she was left jobless, disheartened, and wondering what to do next.

Having previously worked in hospitality, Nastasia empathizes with current hospitality workers who may be overworked, underpaid and unhappy with their situations. In the past year, at coSCRIPT, she has been taking over client businesses’ social media and marketing which allows for staff to relax momentarily and to focus on more important daily tasks. Since working for coSCRIPT, Nastasia has become more “passionate to learn and grow and continue to change [her workplace] story.”

coSCRIPT is currently partnered with a local cafe, Hazel Hayes, which is located at 1 Nisbet Street just below the Atrium

Despite the struggles of hospitality in today’s climate, coSCRIPT is a solution. They aim to reconstruct the industry so that managers and staff can work side-by-side to create a harmonious workplace. The core of coSCRIPT is, therefore, not the physical office, but the hospitality workers community that rewrite their workplace stories together. By providing an advocacy service, coSCRIPT encourages hospitality workers to share their stories which are used for finding new businesses to help.

For many hospitality workers, like Nastasia, both in the industry or out, coSCRIPT is a viable solution for any sort of workplace struggle. Through coSCRIPT, your work life and story has the opportunity to change for the better.
