One bunny’s story of loneliness to love

After months alone in the Waikato SPCA, Denny the Rabbit has now found his forever home

Lonely rabbit Denny has a new home – and lots of friends.

The White Lop mix rabbit who featured in the Waikato Independent earlier this year had a tough upbringing and was sad and lonely in the Hamilton SPCA – until Mercer couple, Shelly and Guy Munro adopted him recently.

Denny went to the SPCA in October last year after being found covered in over 500 ticks. His siblings were dead, and he was blind in one eye and later lost part of an ear.

Things were not looking good for the rabbit, and the SPCA, who provided lifesaving care for him, put out an SOS.

Shelley Munro was looking for a friend for her own rabbit, whose best pal, a guinea pig, had died.

She called into the SPCA and immediately fell in love with Denny.

“I just loved his character”, she says.

Denny is now enjoying a rural lifestyle with new friends Kevin the pig, Baxter the dog, and Buttons the rabbit.

Shelly and Guy are building a new home and the pets enjoy life in a fenced-off area with pens. The fences are lined with mesh so the rabbits can roam freely, and at night they are kept in a secure pen.

It took a bit of time for the two rabbits to get to know each other but they have now developed a bond, and Shelley often notices Buttons grooming Denny.

Shelley says that the SPCA must have worked so hard with Denny to be able to make him so friendly. Unlike his female friend, Buttons, Denny loves cuddles and often finds himself falling asleep in Shelley’s lap.

Shelley hopes to someday be able to host school visits, so that the children can develop a love for the animals just as she has.
