Traffic jams after truck accident

A road closure caused heavy traffic jams and delays through the southern approaches to the city this morning. Police closed the road after an accident on on Cobham Drive just before 3am.

Police advised they had responded to a truck that had rolled near Bader, Hamilton City, blocking both North and South bound lanes of Cobham Drive. A crane was required to assist with the removal of the truck.

Motorists were advised to avoid this area while it was cleared and re-opened, which was expected around 6:30am today.

As commuters started to come into the city around 7am the road was still closed and long queues started forming through Melville, Bader, Hillcrest and Hamilton East in particular causing delays.

Chedworth resident Abby Dalgety said the roads in from the Hukanui area were also much busier than normal as people took alternative routes into the city.

The road opened finally just before 8am with traffic banked up for another hour.
